Cléon Train Derailment: Investigators Focus on Damaged Rail Section as Victims Improve

Mark Thomas·September 14, 2026·1 min read

Two days after a regional train derailed near Cléon in Seine-Maritime, French investigators are concentrating on a section of rail that the Rouen prosecutor described as shredded by the impact, according to ici.fr. The same prosecutor credited the driver's actions with preventing what he called a far more serious tragedy, bfmtv.com reports. Actu.fr says the investigation has made progress since the crash and that there is encouraging news about the condition of the victims.

Beyond the criminal inquiry, Le Monde.fr reports that a separate technical investigation has been opened into the derailment of the TER in Normandy. The two tracks of inquiry are running in parallel, with the judicial probe examining possible causes and the technical review assessing the rail infrastructure and operating conditions.

The disruption to passengers continues. Paris-Normandie.fr reports that buses are replacing trains on the Rouen to Elbeuf-Saint-Aubin line while the route remains out of service.

The damaged rail fragment identified by the prosecutor is likely to be central to establishing why the train left the tracks. Investigators have not publicly stated a cause, and no conclusions have been announced.

Further updates are expected as the judicial and technical investigations proceed and as rail service on the affected line is restored.
